I don't understand how it can be confusing. Max went wide whilst overtaking and gained an advantage whilst over taking. How hard this that to understand

As a causal fan it looks bad. To me Max had nowhere else to go and was pushed off the track in the act of overtaking Lewis, yet he's penalised for move?

If you look on the onboard of Verstappen, you can see he oversteered which does help the fact he went onto the runoff and is probably the main reason he went into the runoff. If he didnt oversteer i'm sure he would of kept the position.

Well I understand it is sour for Red Bull. Verstappen was already passed Lewis when he went off track. I would say rules are rules but Lewis gained time in goong wide so much in turn 4. The officials messed this one up.

Sorry, but take away the .10 sec advantage from Hamilton, multiply it by 26 (the number of times he went off track on turn 4), and deduct this advantage from his finish time. Then assign his finish position by where he'd fall looking at that time, 2.6 seconds later. It was his cumulative lasting advantage. 26x 0.1 secs.

Max was allready in front off lewis before turn 4...( see footish off lando norris ) so in fact he run wide the same as lewis did 29 times during the race .. An other thing is that de steward did not say to give the place back..red bull made a mistake by asuming they had to give back the lead back from the stewards.. On top...iff max just went on without giving the place back the penalty would be 5 seconds at most...

Leaving the track in turn 4 has various lasting advantages: faster laps (hence why they were annulled in FP/Quali), being faster than drivers not leaving the track, less tire wear as the lateral acceleration/force is lower. Doing this well over 20 times by choice (!) is cleary taking advantage of it. Imho it was a very biased decision in favor of Hamilton to ignore the gains he made by leaving track limits and having Verstappen concede his position. Also, you can see that Verstappen lost his rear for a split second before fully going off track and turning in more wasn't really a viable option as his rear was still next to hamilton. (But you gotta admire how fast Hamilton is to complain about how he was overtaken outside - not even 3 Seconds till the radio came on.)

Not seeing the big problem here. You can't pass on any track by going off track. Even if Hamilton was going off, when they told him to stop he stopped. He didn't pass anyone, Verstappen did. He obviously completed a pass while off the track. Not cool. I can see him being very frustrated and desperate but he was up against a better driver, that's all.

The different rules interpretation comes down 2 1 thing. There is 1 set of rules for Lewis, 1 for everyone else. This channel licks Lewis' boots so they'll never acknowledge it but it's just the flat out truth.

What I don't understand about track limits is this. Take another sport that has a clearly defined track - like marathon running. Sure you have a track boundary - often marked by railings that you simply CAN'T cross. The difference with F1 is that you don't have a physical boundary that you can't cross (except for places like Monaco with Armco everywhere) - simply a painted white line that marks the edge of the track and, at turns, kerbing - both of which can be crossed. These drivers are supposed to be the best in the world - so how about the rule that as long as the car stays on track it is okay and if it goes off track it isn't. For me, having the outside wheels over (but not touching) the white line and you are off track - sort of treating the white line as the edge of a station platform - go over the white line completely and you'd fall off. Okay, so that would mean that the drivers would have to reduce their entry speed to the corners to ensure that they didn't do that and some would manage that better than others (and different cars would also allow differing degrees of control in the corners) - but wouldn't that be a way of testing these drivers - supposedly the best in the world? One rule - applied everywhere - one outside wheel completely over the white line - not okay. Because this might happen (a lot) in a race - how about an automatic 1 second penalty for EACH and EVERY time a driver does this. We'd soon see the 'best of the bset' adhering to the track limits. Possibly a further penalty - do it 10 times in a race and automatic disqualification?? The HARD part is what happens if you go over the white line accidentally (tyres or brakes going off), or a collision, or being forced off by another car running wide (I'd call that unsporting behaviour - running another car off the track). That is why you would have stewards (and I'd have the SAME stewards at ALL RACES in an attempt at consistency). Think back to the early days of F1 when hay bales and rope marked the track boundary - would it be okay to cut a corner by missing a hay bale or passing through/over a rope - NO. So why any different for a painted white line? Of course a very easy way of enforcing track limits is to Armco both sides of the track - everywhere. Try using 'extra space' at the corners then! Going off track in all circumstances should not result in an advantage, if an advantage is gained they must be instructed to give it back or suffer a 5 sec penalty per infringement.

Aah for god's sake, I'm sick and tired of this bullshit of track limit politics. If they want to keep the cars on track just put some (not so deep) sand or gravel or grass in this runoff areas and end once and for all with this tarmac surfaces. The cars will be able to continue but will lose time so drivers will naturaly take that into count. This things just take the magic of F1 out and drivers are just unable to push to their limits.

Inch perfect by exceeding track limits for half the race, gaining a "LASTING" advantage throughout the race. The Race you need to start commenting the truth, that graphic of the corner pass was misleading, also play the whole graphic of all the car positions through the race, and you will see Lewis get a lasting advantage as he keeps running wide to pull closer and closer to Max. How sad the FIA can't even put on a fair race in 2021.

Max had already made a complete pass by Lewis on the straight, for just a fraction of a second, but he made it, so by the rules stated, Max didn't run wide "During" his pass, he ran wide as Lewis tried to make a pass on the inside. Max should have to give the place back.

The animation show Mercedes car actually on the outside of the exit of the turn which red bull were alongside. So where does the red bull go cannot back off as the two cars are alongside each other. It means the inside driver can push the outside driver outside of track limits and claim illegal use. Yes if one was behind but your animation show they were alongside at the apex of the turn, let alone after.

Shouldn’t matter where on the track it is if your car is outside the white lines then that’s exceeding track limits. These guys are meant to be the best drivers in the world

A clear way to look at track limits is that part of the car must remain inside the track limits. ie. two tires can cross over the white line but not all four. If cars routinely exceed the limits then change the track/ corner design as the cars are behaving based on the rules they were designed to meet.

According to the rules even if track limits are not imposed rule 23.7 you still can't get out of track limits for no apparent reason to gain timr advantage so yes Hamilton should had been penalised

The race came down to tyre preservation, and all that turn 4 wide running was a part of Hamilton's victory. So although I don't blame him, it makes the win feel artificial and I blame the race directors for not just making the rule simple: "Stay on the track".

Rules are clear about TL but if you're overtaking someone than the rule must not be applied to prevent collision of the other driver on the race line. It's not fair Hamilton not being punished for going over the line while during a normal lap.

I mean I'm no expert but there is a very easy solution. The white line is the edge of the track. So dont cross it, EVER. And if that's to hard for drivers to understand stick a gravel trap on the edge so there is a actual consequences for going off track

Track limits in F1 are quickly becoming an equavalent to penalty flags in american football. It provides a gray area for the "powers that be" to alter the final outcome in a closely contested game. This is not very much different. And for the driver with the fastest car to be the primary beneficiary of those rules the last few years is suspect at best. The fact in the many years they went racing in Bahrain and it has not occured to someone that turn 4 should be slightly widened because it is an attack spot is beyond my comprehesion. But even if they insist on not altering turn 4, make the white line the track limit and stick with it, because this topic is getting old.

These rules were ridiculous. Hamilton would not have been ahead after the pit stops had he not exploited the track limits. It was no different to Verstappen's overtake. However blame lies exclusively with Masi, a race driver is to gain any advantage he can get away with which is what Hamilton did.

the reference for track limits in turn 4 were the artificoial gras and gravel trap, defined in the race directors notes: "21.2 Race a) The track limits at the exit of Turn 4 will not be monitored with regard to setting a lap time, as the defining limits are the artificial grass and the gravel trap in that location." Idiots. vertsppan was robbed the victory.

Only way to make it more fair is make going out off the racing surface is to make it unfriendly to the cars. Higher berm and speed bumps with gravel. And... get rid of tyre warmers and less crew over the wall for pit stops.

I can't see this objectively as I don't want Hamilton to win again. He's a great driver and if he performs better than Verstappen and everyone else, it's fine. But the FIA should really think about these confusing rules and penalties, so we can't accuse them of treating drivers differently. Thinking about rules instead of the cars just feels bad.
